Year 6
The Year 6 classes are Kestrels and Eagles.
Your child’s learning will be theme based, with the current theme being integrated throughout the subjects to consolidate the information. Our themes in Year 6 are:
· The Great Wars-covering World War I and World War II.
· The Final Frontier-covering Space exploration through the ages.
· Home of the Derby- covering the history of our local area and the role the Suffragettes played.
· Who Do You Think you Are? – covering Darwin and transition to secondary school
Our themes are taught through a creative curriculum and linked to our writing using books, such as Private Peaceful, for inspiration.
Home learning tasks are set at the beginning of each term and your child will then be able to decide which order to approach them in. This is a central feature of our home learning programme which develops their time management and selection skills. Weekly homework will also be set for Maths and English (Grammar and Reading Comprehension). Daily reading at home is also required along with a weekly spelling test.
Throughout Year 6 we have a number of exciting trips planned including a residential trip to Kingswood in the Summer term where the children have the opportunity to experience a variety of fantastic activities.
Year 6 children across the country take their SATs exams in May each year. During the Autumn and Spring terms we practise exam skills so each child will be fully prepared and can achieve results which accurately reflect their ability.
